Scar Camouflage in Edmonton: Are You a Candidate? | Studio Vanassa

What is scar camouflage?

Scar camouflage is a form of paramedical tattooing that blends a scar into the skin around it. We use carefully matched pigment, placed into the scar tissue, so the scar stands out less and the skin tone looks more even. The goal is not to erase the scar completely. The goal is to make it less noticeable, so you think about it less day to day.

At Studio Vanassa, scar camouflage sits alongside vitiligo camouflage, stretchmark revision, scalp micropigmentation, and areola restoration. We quote each person individually after a consultation, because the right plan depends on the size, location, and character of your scar.

How does scar camouflage work?

First, we look at your scar in person and talk through what bothers you most about it. Is it lighter than the skin around it? Does it catch the light differently? That conversation sets a realistic goal for the result.

Then we select pigment to match your surrounding skin tone as closely as possible. During the appointment, pigment is implanted into the scar tissue. The area may look darker at first while it heals, then it settles as the skin recovers.

Most people need more than one session. Touch-up sessions are priced separately, so we can build the colour gradually rather than going too dark in one visit, which gives a softer, more natural blend.

Are you a good candidate for scar camouflage?

You may be a good candidate if several of these points sound like you:

  • Your scar is fully healed, stable, and no longer changing in size, colour, or texture.

  • Your scar is lighter than the skin around it, which is the contrast camouflage is best at softening.

  • Your scar is flat or close to flat, rather than raised, sunken, or very thick.

  • You are in good general health and your skin in the area is healthy and intact.

  • You understand that camouflage softens a scar rather than removing it, and you are hoping for a more even look, not perfection.

  • You can follow aftercare instructions and protect the area from the sun while it heals.

Scars from surgery, injury, acne, or other healed wounds can all be worth discussing, and a consultation is the only way to know for sure.

When is scar camouflage not the right choice?

Scar camouflage is not right for every scar, and we would rather tell you that honestly than book you in for a result we cannot deliver. It is usually not the right choice if:

  • Your scar is still healing, changing, red, or irritated. Healed and stable skin gives a far more predictable result.

  • Your scar is raised, keloid, or very thick. Pigment does not flatten raised tissue, and treating this kind of scar can make it more noticeable.

  • You have an active skin condition, infection, or broken skin in the area to be treated.

  • Your scar is darker than the skin around it. Camouflage works by adding pigment, so it is best suited to scars that are lighter than their surroundings.

  • You are looking for a complete removal of the scar, including its texture. Tattooing changes colour, not the physical shape of the skin.

If scar camouflage is not right for you, we will say so at your consultation.

What should you expect at your appointment?

Your first step is a consultation at our Whyte Avenue studio in Edmonton. We look at the scar in natural light, talk about your health history and your skin, and explain what a realistic result would look like for you. We also discuss how many sessions you may need and what the plan would cost, so there are no surprises.

On treatment day, we clean and prepare the area, confirm the pigment match with you, and work carefully across the scar. Expect some redness and tenderness afterward, and we will give you clear aftercare instructions before you leave.

Healing takes time. The treated area often looks stronger in colour at first, then softens over the following weeks. Keep the area clean, avoid picking or scratching, and protect it from the sun while it heals, since sun can change how pigment settles.

How should you prepare for scar camouflage?

Before your appointment, avoid tanning the area, and tell us about any skin treatments, medications, or health changes that could affect healing. Arrive with clean skin, and bring photos of the scar over time if you have them.

Most importantly, come with your questions. Ask us what result is realistic for your scar, how many sessions we expect, and what healing will look like for you. A good consultation should leave you feeling informed, not pressured.

What does healing look like?

In the first days, the area may be red, tender, and a little swollen. As it settles, the colour softens and blends more naturally. It can take several weeks for the final result to show, which is why we assess the outcome after healing, not on treatment day.

If a further session is needed, we plan it once the skin has fully settled, so we can judge the colour accurately and add pigment only where it is still needed.

Frequently asked questions

Does scar camouflage remove a scar completely?

No. Scar camouflage softens the colour contrast of a scar so it blends better with the surrounding skin. It does not remove the scar or change its texture.

How do I know if my scar is healed enough?

Your scar should be fully healed, stable, and no longer changing. If it is still red, irritated, or changing shape, it is usually too soon. We confirm this in person at your consultation.

Does scar camouflage hurt?

Most people describe it as similar to other tattoo work, with some discomfort that is manageable. Sensitivity varies by location and by person, and we work at a pace that keeps you comfortable.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the size, colour, and character of your scar. Many people need more than one session, with touch-up sessions priced separately, so we can build colour gradually for a natural blend.

How much does scar camouflage cost in Edmonton?

We quote scar camouflage individually, because no two scars are the same. After your consultation at Studio Vanassa, you will know the plan and the cost before you decide to go ahead.

Ready to find out if scar camouflage is right for you?

If a healed scar still catches your eye every day, a consultation is the best next step. We will look at your scar in person, give you an honest opinion, and explain the plan and cost before you commit.
