Does getting a tattoo hurt?
Yes, getting a tattoo hurts a little. Most clients tell us it hurts less than they expected, and almost all say it was worth it. Tattoo pain is real, but it is manageable, and it does not last. The sharpest feeling usually comes in the first few minutes, while your skin gets used to the sensation.
At Studio Vanassa, on Whyte Avenue in Edmonton, we would rather tell you the truth before you book than let you guess. Pain is different for every person, and it changes with placement, size, and session length.
What does getting a tattoo actually feel like?
Most people describe tattoo pain as a scratching, buzzing, or hot scratching feeling, rather than a sharp pain. It can feel like a cat scratch that keeps going in one spot, or a warm sting that rises and falls. Some lines feel stronger than shading, and the feeling is rarely constant from start to finish.
Your body also adapts. The first few minutes can feel the most intense because the sensation is new. As the session goes on, many clients relax and breathe more slowly. That does not mean it stops hurting. It means your body learns what to expect, and the worry fades.
Does getting a tattoo hurt more in some places than others?
Yes, placement makes a difference. Areas with more muscle and thicker skin, such as the outer arm, the outer thigh, and the calf, tend to feel more manageable for most people. Areas where skin sits close to bone, such as the ribs, the spine, the ankle, the wrist, and the top of the foot, tend to feel sharper. Areas with thinner or more sensitive skin, such as the inner arm and the stomach, can also feel stronger.
That does not mean you should avoid a placement you love. It means we can talk about it honestly before we start, and plan the session and breaks around it. Pain varies within one placement too, so use any pain chart as a rough guide only.
What affects how much a tattoo hurts?
Placement, size, and session length all play a part. Larger pieces and longer sessions ask more of your skin and your focus, so they often feel harder near the end than at the start, and we may split a very large piece across more than one appointment. Small pieces are usually over before the discomfort has time to build.
How rested you are matters too. Clients who arrive tired, hungry, or dehydrated often find the session harder. A good night of sleep, a proper meal beforehand, and water through the day help more than most people expect. Stress matters as well. If you arrive tense, your muscles stay tight and every sensation feels louder.
Sunburn, scraped skin, and irritated skin can also make a session feel stronger, so tell us if an area is sore. We may suggest waiting until the skin has settled. If you feel unwell on the day, let us know. We would rather reschedule than push through a session that will feel worse and heal less well.
How can I make my tattoo appointment more comfortable?
Arrive rested, fed, and hydrated. Eat a proper meal before your appointment, bring water, and wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the area being tattooed. Loose layers work well, and a layer you can add afterward helps if you feel chilly on the way home.
Breathe slowly and keep your body relaxed. Keep the area still and your muscles soft, and let your artist know if you need to shift, stretch, or take a break. A short pause usually makes the rest of the session easier. Do not try to tough it out in silence. Keep your plans for afterward simple, with a quiet evening and an early night, and follow the aftercare guidance we give you in the studio.
Please do not use a numbing product before your appointment without asking us first. Some products change how the skin behaves, and we need to know what is on your skin before we start. Ask us in advance, and we will give you an honest answer for your piece.
Does a tattoo hurt after it is done?
A fresh tattoo often feels sore, warm, and tender afterward, a bit like a sunburn or a graze. That tenderness is normal, and it usually eases over the first few days. The area may feel tight or itchy as it heals. Try not to scratch or pick at it, and follow the aftercare steps we give you.
If pain grows worse instead of easing, or if you notice swelling, heat, or other signs that worry you, contact us. We would rather hear from you early and help you than have you worry alone.
Is pain a reason to put off a tattoo you want?
For most people, no. Pain is part of getting a tattoo, but it is short lived, and the piece stays with you for years. Tell us what worries you, where you are thinking of placing it, and how long you think you can sit comfortably. We can suggest a placement, a size, and a session plan that fit you, and start with a smaller piece if a large one feels like too much for a first session. Start where you feel confident, and build from there.
