The Importance of Aftercare

Eyelash Extension Edition

Long-lasting, luscious eyelash extensions are 50% the artist's job and 50% the client’s job.

When eyelash extensions first became popular, we had a false belief that we should never touch the extensions or else they would all fall out. (Craziness!) After years of testing and research, we now know that, in fact, it is the opposite that is true. The health of your natural lash line depends on proper aftercare. When you don’t cleanse the eyelashes, dirt, debris, and makeup build up on the base of the lash line. This can cause premature shedding of the extensions, damage to the natural lash line, and Blepharitis.

What is Blepharitis?

You may need to take a seat for this next part… don’t overthink it lol.

We all have mites in our eyelashes. It is totally natural and actually a good thing when kept under control. Lash mites help us keep the lash line clean and free of infection. The problem arises when they are not properly taken care of. When you don’t cleanse your eyelashes everyday, the lash mites can build up and eventually start laying eggs in the lashes! When this happens, the natural lash mites can multiply at an extremely fast rate; Causing red, swollen, itchy eyelids. Dead skin cells will build up around the root of the lashes, causing a flaky crust that will eventually make the eyelash extensions all stick together. If left untreated it can cause further issues such as cysts* and conjunctivitis*. As soon as Blepharitis occurs, you are no longer a candidate for eyelash extensions. Blepharitis is contagious and can sometimes no longer be treated if left alone for too long. To maintain a clean, sanitary environment in our studio we avoid any risk of cross contamination.

*Cysts - A cyst is a sac-like pocket on membranous tissue that contains fluid, air, or other substances. The most common type of cyst that can occur from Blepharitis is a Chalazion cyst. A Chalazion cyst is a small, usually painless lump or swelling on your upper or lower eyelid. Although when combined with Blepharitis, this type of cyst may become very red, swollen, and painful because there is more likely of a chance that infection may be present.

*Conjunctivitis – Also known as “pink eye”, is the inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane that lines your eyelid and eyeball. It’s characterized by redness and a gritty sensation in the eye, along with itchiness. Often a discharge forms a crust on your eyelashes during the night, causing them to stick together in the mornings. Conjunctivitis is highly contagious, and immediately removes you as a candidate for any eyelash or eyebrow procedure.
